Holkham Country Fair
Historic Cars
Organised by Jim Cawte
Display on south side of the House Wall
Grand Ring Parade: 1530 Saturday & 1545 Sunday
This year we have collected a fine display of historic vehicles, representing the development of the motor car over 100 years. Early cars were powered by steam and this gave way to the internal combustion engine. Any motor vehicle was an expensive commodity and this made it rather exclusive to the mechanically minded or the super rich who had someone to care for the vehicles and to drive them. Developments through the decades made the motor car a more attractive proposition than the traditional (four-legged) beasts, and horsepower took on an entirely new meaning. The new age of the 1950s and beyond saw many more people adopting the independence offered by the car.
When viewing the cars on display today, try to take yourself back 50, 60, 70 or even more years. Perhaps you learnt to drive in one of them? The drivers have spent many hours preparing their cars for display at this year’s Country Fair; come and talk to us and share our enthusiasm for preserving our own little piece of history.
