Kiting is something everyone can have a go at. Whether you are 6 or 60+ there are a whole selection of different kites you can have a fantastic time with! Kites are no longer just something you buy on your holiday to fly on the beach. Over the last 10 years Power Kiting has become the new adrenalin packed phenomenon. No longer are kites just small diamond shapes with one line, they can be any size from a metre square to 25 square metres and are filled with enough power to pull a person along at soaring speeds on buggy or board.
The stunt kites are much more fragile and the people flying them have to ensure delicate manipulation in order to do the tricks and stunts. These kites require much more patience and a light touch. The Sheffield Kite Fliers are a group of very enthusiastic people dedicated to the sport which in recent years has become very popular with all age groups. Very small children get massive enjoyment out of static flying a little kite, whereas if you want a bit more of an adrenalin rush you can fly a bigger kite and get pulled along at 30mph - the choice is yours!
On Friday and Saturday SKF will be inviting people to come watch them as they use their kites to board and buggy around the field opposite the river but will also be inviting people to take part in taster sessions (limited availability - booking on the day is essential) with some of the club's qualified trainers and instructors at various times throughout the day. There will be an opportunity to come and look at all the equipment kiting involves, talk to the members about their passion and even have a try. Sheffield Kite Fliers official Flying Site is at Lodge Moor in Sheffield. However, the club regularly take to the road visiting kiting beaches across the UK. Many weekends are spent at Cleethorpes beach and for long weekends away there is no place better than Wales with its long stretches of beautiful white sand.
